The $10 Gram and the $80 Eighth: A Field Taxonomy of Cannabis Spenders
Walk into any dispensary in America and you can sort the room in about ninety seconds. Not by what they buy — by how they buy it. There's the person glued to the deals menu on their phone. There's the person who asks the budtender what they smoke. There's the person who scans the shelf, finds the single most expensive jar, and doesn't even look at the price tag.
We spent a few weeks talking to shoppers in Denver, Portland, and Ann Arbor about what they spend and why. What came back wasn't just a bunch of receipts. It was a whole personality map. So consider this a field guide — and see if you recognize yourself.
The Deal Hunter (Budget: $10–$20 a visit)
The Deal Hunter doesn't walk into a dispensary. They deploy into one. They know which dispensary has shake grams on Mondays, which one runs a BOGO on eighths at the end of the month, and they have push notifications on for at least three different shops.
"I haven't paid full price for flower since 2021," Marcus, a line cook in Portland, told us, with the quiet pride of a man describing a war. "People act like deal weed is bad. Deal weed is just weed that's on sale."
He's not entirely wrong. A lot of discounted flower is last month's harvest or an overstocked strain, which is fine. The trap is the bottom-shelf stuff that's dry, seedy, or a year old. The Deal Hunter's skill is knowing the difference — and the good ones genuinely do.
What it says about you: You're practical, patient, and probably good with money everywhere else in your life. You'd rather smoke an okay gram for $10 than a great gram for $35, and honestly, you're having just as good a time.
The Loyalist (Budget: $30–$50 a visit)
The Loyalist found their strain, and that was that. Maybe it was Blue Dream in college, maybe it was Wedding Cake during the pandemic. Either way, they walk in, say the name, pay, and leave. The menu might as well be a one-item list.
"I tried to branch out once," admits Dana from Ann Arbor. "The budtender talked me into something 'gassy.' I didn't like it, I panicked, I bought my usual on the way home. Never again."
What it says about you: Consistency is your love language. You know what works and you see no reason to gamble with your Tuesday night. There's real wisdom here — though we'd gently suggest that the terpene profiles on today's shelves have moved on, and so might you.
The Connoisseur (Budget: $60–$80+ a visit)
The Connoisseur reads the harvest date. The Connoisseur asks about the cultivator by name. The Connoisseur owns a jar with a humidity pack in it and judges you silently if your flower is in a sandwich bag.
"I'd rather have one incredible eighth a month than four mediocre ones," says Priya, a graphic designer in Denver, who showed us a photo of a live-resin-infused eighth that cost more than her weekly grocery run. "It's the same reason I don't drink cheap wine. Life's short."
Is premium flower always worth double? Not always — the top shelf has plenty of marketing tax baked in. But the Connoisseur usually knows the difference between genuinely craft-grown bud and a fancy jar with mid flower inside. That's the skill. The spending is just the receipt.
What it says about you: You treat cannabis the way some people treat coffee or wine — as a small luxury worth doing right. Just watch out for the point where connoisseurship turns into brand loyalty to a logo.
The Social Smoker (Budget: $0, technically)
The Social Smoker has never actually purchased cannabis, yet somehow always has some. They appear at the sesh, they contribute a playlist and good vibes, and their portion of the bill is an ongoing philosophical debate nobody has settled.
What it says about you: You're either beloved or broke, and possibly both.

The Real Answer
Here's the thing we kept hearing from everyone we talked to, regardless of budget: nobody regretted what they spent. They regretted what they didn't know. The Deal Hunter who bought mids, the Loyalist who never tried something better, the Connoisseur who paid craft prices for corporate flower — the mistake was never the number. It was not knowing why.
So whether you're budgeting ten bucks or eighty, the move is the same: smell it, check the harvest date, ask questions, and buy what's actually right for you. The plant doesn't care what you paid. It just wants you to enjoy it.
